[Venus Spring 2007] Katharine “E” Hamnett
If you are among the many who would rather eat elephant poo than see another slogan t-shirt, then grab a fork. You might remember British fashion designer Katharine Hamnett’s politically-outspoken t-shirts from the 1980s, most infamously making the “CHOOSE LIFE” shirts (often thought to be anti-abortion, but were actually anti-drugs) in Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” video and “FRANKIE SAY RELAX”, made popular by the band Frankie Goes To Hollywood. In her attention-grapping style, Hamnett is back with a new “Katharine E. Hamnett” line, full of organic and socially-responsible clothing. Years of protesting for change helped her realize that it was futile to try and work towards change within the existing high fashion system. So, Hamnett cancelled all of her manufacturing licenses and decided to start over, using only sustainable materials and fair trade production. Even after over 30 years in the industry, Kat still draws oodles of media attention. The “E” collection symbolizes her career coming full-circle, featuring organic cotton t-shirts with some slogans you might recognize as well as new ones to inspire people to act. Though environmental action is the focus of two designs, religion and the illegal drug market are drawn into the spotlight as well. Sleek and tailored dresses, tops, skirts, shorts, and knitwear are also featured as part of the new eco-based line. This line seals the deal that sustainability and social action can be sexy and function, so put down your fork, grab your wallet, “protest and survive.”
