Eco-Fashion Euphoria: Emily Katz

Truly exceptional design is hard to find – unless you know where to look. Emily Katz of Portland, Oregon is a true diamond in the rough; just waiting to be discovered the world over. After running the indie clothing brand Bonnie Heart Clyde with her former boyfriend for a few years, she struck out on her own in 2007. Now in its 3rd collection, the Emily Katz line is nothing short of stupendous. Sewn and sourced by Emily herself, her self-titled designs are a true labor of love.

What makes a good clothing brand? Sizing for real women? Attention to detail? Use of sustainable fabrics? Emily Katz has all 3 in spades. The Fall 2008 collection, entitled “In Whispers”, reminds me of my ethereal yet efficient days traveling in Europe. There is no fashion law that says you can’t wear pastels amongst the darker shades of autumn, and Emily unabashedly steps into this territory. Lilac jeans and nearly-midnight blue trench coats dance seamlessly among orange and red maple leaves.

Unlike many designers who focus exclusively on fashion, Emily Katz happily opens up her heart to an array of creative endeavors. Samples of her ongoing artistic work is available on her website, including paintings and embroidery. Along with fellow members Steve, Jeevan, and Emily Baker, Katz creates beautiful music with her brand Love Menu. Inspired by the name of her band, Emily started a blog titled Lovemenu, sharing her passion for good food and friends with the world.
