VE Sponsor: Eco-Fashion Embraces A New, Affordable Shopping Destination

Watch out Greenloop. Keep cool Equita. There’s a new green online shopping destination, ready to take the web by storm.

Enter: Fashion and Earth!

Based on Canada’s Prince Edward Island, Fashion and Earth is the brainchild of Adrian Desbarats. “We aim to make it easier for everybody to access high-quality eco-friendly fashions that look and feel great to offer a truly sustainable solution to the environmental problems of the traditional garment industry,” he says in the website’s first press release.

A noble goal to be sure, but what makes Fashion and Earth different from other online eco-fashion shops? For starters, all shipping is free – yup, you read that right. All shipping is free, even for return. If you sign up for their e-mail list before the site’s launch next month (September 2008), you’ll receive a 20% off coupon that you can use on any items. Damn good timing, if you ask me – autumn is coming and my favorite organic cotton tops are pretty worn out. Five percent of the entire shop’s profits are donated to sustainable charities and they have an extensively outlined environmental policy in place.

As previously mentioned, Fashion and Earth will be launched in September with a great selection for women … but it doesn’t stop there! Soon after their world wide web debut, Fashion and Earth will be adding offerings for men and children. “We expect to make available green clothing for the entire family by the end of 2009, as we also continually expand our women’s line,” says founder Adrian.

Women’s prices will range between $30 to $120, helping to further the proof that long-lasting, sustainable clothing can be stylish and affordable. Just what will they be selling? I checked with Adrian on that. “HT Naturals, Under the Canopy, Ecolution, Indigenous Designs, B-Green, Her Design LLC and Kim White Hand Bags. That is just the beginning. It is our intent to keep adding as cash flow permits in an attempt to give consumers a one stop shop for all their eco-fashion shopping needs,” he said on Sunday.

From the early buzzing, it sounds like Fashion and Earth have their priorities straight. Being a true one stop shop is a big undertaking; something that other online eco-fashion shops have tried to accomplish already, though none have quite made it that far yet. From the shop’s layout and brand list, I think Fashion and Earth will appeal to not only city dwellers but rural shoppers as well. Stay tuned for more details on Fashion and Earth in the coming months!

  1. Go Adrian! Go Green! Go Fashion & Earth!

  2. The price point is great but what I’m really excited about is some fashion for men!

How are they measuring their carbon footprint?

  3. Hi Christopher,

We are looking into a variety of LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) software programs available out there such as Cleanmetrics, Sima Pro, GaBi, etc that can provide a very comprehensive break down of carbon footprint by product as well as through the supply chain.

These software tools are not cheap and so we are working very diligently to ensure we choose the right tool for our application. However, if any company is serious about evaluating their impact and findings ways to improve their footprint such as tool is necessary as it provides a yard stick that we can use to asses our progress.

    Thanks for the question Chris!

    Regards,

    Adrian Desbarats

  4. I’m glad to hear you’ve heard of LCA and its interesting to hear of some of these software programs – I have not heard of all of them.

Have you heard of ShipGreen? They launched last fall but now their website says they are developing a new version of their software. They had software that was offered for free and had developed the program with folks out of UC Berkeley – http://www.shipgreen.net.

Measuring your carbon footprint is definitely a daunting task. Great to learn what you’re doing about it :)

  5. Thanks for the tip Chris. I took a look at the ShipGreen site and signed up for more information. I always appreciate these kinds of leads!

As for FAE – we will operate out of two warehouses – one in Toronto, Canada to service our Canadian customers and one in Michigan to service our US customers. Both warehouses were chosen for the central locations to help minimize shipping distances. Not only should this reduce our carbon footprint related to shipping but will also reduce shipping times to our customers.

  9. hmmm! this is really interesting. i’m a fashion designer myself and recently i’ve been trying to research more into sustainable fabrics and manufacturing processes. it’s hard because there isn’t enough information out there!

  10. Until raw matierals are sourced organicall, the item is produced in a carbon neutral way, packaged in a biodegradable material, shipped with the lowest CO2 emmissions possible and then reused to make another garment once it has served its purpose then I wish the sustainable fashion tag would stop being used!!
